Well…not really.  Nobody died.  My family is in good health, knock on wood.  I still have a job.  My wife still gets cised for me.   We just had our 3rd child.  I just finished having a silly pizza from Manny’s Pizza and Subs. I’m typing this from my electric leather recliner in my media room in front of my 100 inch screen and my 6 other TV’s.  Life is pretty freaking good- except for poker.  In life I’m totally free rolling.  In poker I’m the biggest fish on Full Tilt right now.

You want to feel good about yourself?  Get into a hand with me and watch me overplay my hand, get no action on my made hands or in the rare instance I actually get it in ahead enjoy the runner runner suckouts that I endure routinely.   It’s not just suckouts.  I forgot how to win a hand.  This month I’ve dedicated myself to the NL100 game and once again it crushes my soul.  I’m pretty sure I have come to one conclusion beyond the obvious fact that I can’t beat the game.  I don’t think you can run over the NL100 game the way you can run over the NL50.  It’s obvious to me after really analyzing my play over the last 250k hands that the NL50 game can be modestly beat with simple liberal agression.  Not so at NL100.  I dare someone to prove me otherwise.

Late position steals are not respected.  C bets are completely played back.    If you 3 bet they 4 bet if you flat the guy behind squeezes.  Basically you have to flop the nuts and cooler somebody and hope they don’t draw out on you.  If you know of any other way please let me know.

I’m thinking of just playing SNG’s and MTT’s.  I figure any shithead can play those well.   Hope you are playing better and have some suggestions for a meathead radio guy that apparently tops out at NL50.  (And don’t just say play fewer tables.  I can’t.  Too boring.  And with my HUD and everything else I can see who’s running a table over etc.  It’s just that I apparently can’t adjust properly).

Yo EB, first, that is a nubs graph. Second you should really consider learning to play SNGs. It is still a grind, but I think I may be like you in having frustrations with cash games. SNG’s can be won, especially at the $11 level, with a pretty mechanical play style at first.

The basic play style of the $11 SNG is similar to NL 25 with very straightforward play mixed in with liberal jackassery. What you don’t get is a lot of three bets with nothing or squeezes. If nothing else it is a great break when cash games make you homicidal.

Don’t play sngs…. stick to the cash games… it is where all the steady money is at. I think this is just a rough patch that you will get through. Stick with it. Don’t quit.

You make it sound like you do so much better at the nl50 game when in reality you don’t. Do you even have a 1bb/100 winrate there? It’s so small that it can go either way.

Not that I’m blaming you, I’ve played on ftp and the games are just not beatable any more. There’s too many grinders and you’re just lucky to get 2 fish on one table going down as low as nl5.

It just goes to show that even an nl1000 player can’t give you any helpful tips because everyone already knows everything thanks to card runners. There is no magic formula, it’s all out in the open and that’s why you will never really be able to make more than rakeback.

The players you talked about that ran their bankroll up through the limits just ran super hot. When you have 1 million people trying to do something, 2-3 of them will get really fortunate and get to run extremely hot for a very long period of time. You might hear about the phil galfonds but do you hear about all those people who failed? of course not, that’s because they didn’t have the same run when coming up and now it’s just too late.

    EB,

I know i’ve played w/you a ton in the past, mostly at 50nl. But a couple months ago i finally made the transition to 100nl successfully and have been doing very well there. But it definetely wasn’t without some running bad and gettin used to. You’re 100% right about the increased aggression in later positions. I’ll never forget how people would say there is no difference, BS! There was a huge difference! I will say this though…after really paying alot of attention to general 100nl tendencies like for example…if somone in m/lp raises and i flat from the CO or button…chances are an aggressive reg in the blind is gonna squeeze in some spots…so keeping little stuff like that in mind and then being able to take advantage of situations like that has really helped me. Another thing that i think helped me was letting my BR grow enough to be playing the limit. I was constantly withdrawing money and finally decided to get 40 buyins for the limit and it mentally made a huge difference! Anyways there are a bunch of little things to watch out for at 100nl that i dont remember having to do at 50nl, but i can honestly say now after 3 months at 100nl its gotten much easier!! Good luck and i say screw sng’s!

I feel your pain. As I’ve mentioned before, I enjoy the SNG and MTT more than NL50 or NL100 games (I also enjoy live games more). Rather than focusing on building my bankroll or moving up to the nosebleed games, I focus on improving my tourney play.

With SNGs and MTTs, its easier to set and maintain limits, while offering a potentially exanded upside. Also, who doesn’t dream of parlaying a satellite into a seat at the big tables.

Give ‘em a try and see what you think (you can, of course, fill your screen with SNGs almost as easy as the NL50s to increase the action and break the monotony). Of course it’s a different game than NL but you can still fixate on pushing your limits to get your ‘poker rush’.

    . . . I guess that makes me a ’shithead’ . . .

play some midstakes tournies while playing nl50. i personally love playing tournies, but since you find them too boring, play a couple tables at the same time.

    hi,
switching to SNGs means spending hours and hours learning ICM on some kind of ICM trainer, and pretty much abandoning postflop play, so I don’t think that’s a good idea. What you should realise is that yes, these NL100 players are doing a lot of advanced aggressive stuff, but that they’re doing it badly, and that you can change your play to counter them.

i’m a random listener/ftp reg(not playing the same games as you though)

  9. Ben Coy says:

How about playing some 6 max? Just an idea but you could play less table without getting bored.

  10. Mehrban says:

EBBBB. I agree with Ben, play some 6-max man. You need more reads and hence will be less bored while also decreasing your number of tables. I used to 24 table micros full ring, and was like F that, so I switched to 4tabling and I have progressed to 100NL comfortably. It is fun making reads and 3betting the aggro-monkeys lighter and making good calls etc. Anyways you can get those 9 buyins backs in a couple days so keep grinding and consider 6-max! gl.

  11. abz says:

6max is just as horribly reg infested as fullring. There’s no difference besides more variance. Your only chance to beat poker is to just deposit a ton of money and 1-2 table nl400 tables

NEW POKER MOVIE WITH OMG IN IT!!!!!!!!!

Greg Lavery worked at a McDonald’s in Wisconsin. He nursed a video game addiction. He collected Simpsons figurines. Then, Chris Moneymaker won the 2003 World Series of Poker and everything changed. Greg became ‘Captain Zeebo’, a menacing force of poker talent feared by every player on the Internet. In three years he amassed a staggering poker fortune before everything changed again.

Why don’t you post more videos of your sessions? I would like to critique.

  14. EB says:

Good idea red…I will post another video here in the next week or so. It’s hard to be inspired to make a video when you are get soul crushed. But i’ll concentrate on that…and Im just venting about sng’s and mtt’s…I’m a cash game snob even when i’m swooning.
